  1967 BRM Project 109 :

BRM Project 109, 1967, UK
H-16 (180 Twin-8) 2998cc, 400bhp @ 10,500rpm

BRM (British Racing Motors) started as the brainchild of Raymond Mays who, with Peter Berthon, conceived the idea of a racing car built and financed by members of the British motor industry and accessory manufacturers.
Although it was a valiant effort and it produced a highly advanced engine, the communal ideal proved impractical and BRM was finally acquired by Alfred Owen, who financed the entire project through the Owen Group of Companies.
The BRM firm was extremely unusual in that it built only Grand Prix cars and never at any time attempted to build sports or road cars.
While keeping with the ever changing rules governing Grand Prix racing, the company continued to experiment with its engine design. In the mid 1960's a H-type 16 cylinder configuration, previously tried only in aero engines, was adopted.
Installed in the Project 83 chassis in 1966, the BRM, h-16 was raced by Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart with Stewart recording record a new lap record and second place in the Belgium Grand Prix. The most significant victory for the H-16 engine was the USA Grand Prix when fitted to a Lotus 43 driven by Jimmy Clark.
This particular H-16 vehicle, designated Project 109, was prepared by the BRM works solely as an exhibition model for Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada.
