  1923 Alfa Romeo RLS :

Alfa Romeo RLS, 1923, Italy
6 cylinder, 2994cc, 71bhp @ 3500rpm, maximum speed 75mph (121km/h)

After World War I Alfa Romeo began planning the production of a car which would comply with the Grand Prix engine capacity limit - 3 litres. This became known as the RL and when production commenced in 1923, two models were available, a touring chassis RL Normale and the RL Sport (RLS) which featured the larger engine, twin carburetors and a shorter chassis. Improvements continued to be made to the cars and in the September, 1923 the 3rd series cars were fitted with front wheel brakes.
The RLS recorded many competition successes which included: a Class win in the 1923 Gran Premio Turismo at Monza and second place in both the Pozzo Circuit race at Verona and the 24 hour Italian Touring Car Grand Prix at Monza, in 1924.
Added prestige was given to the RLS when the Aga Khan pronounced it one of the most excellent cars he had ever ridden in.
Only 537 RLS models were produced and it is believed that less than 6 survive in the world today. This vehicle was discovered on a farm in Victoria after the Second World War, having been owned by a local dentist.
